A thug who led a 'counter attack' which culminated in the murder of a young dad-to-be in the street has been locked up.
Melvin Whelan, 39, burst out of a house and launched a bottle of beer towards a gang, who had attacked a house.
Minutes later, Charlie Elms, 25, was stabbed to death by 17-year-old Karl Marler.

The explosion of violence in Oldham came after an 'utterly pointless' feud between two rival groups.
A tit-for-tat dispute came to a head on May 26, when Charlie and five other men arrived in the town's Limeside estate.
Charlie was armed with a machete, and others also had weapons.
Shocking footage shows the gang attack a house, with one hacking at the front door with a machete.
A scooter was also thrown at the property.
Whelan can then be seen emerging from the house, wearing a navy blue T-shirt, throwing a bottle of beer towards the attackers before charging towards a car and kicking it.
Marler, who would go on to knife Charlie to death, also emerged, wearing a camouflage jacket.
The gang retreated to the blue Vauxhall Corsa they arrived in.
Four of Charlie's group were able to flee in the Corsa, leaving Charlie and another man called Josh Newport behind.
Marler then chased Charlie and Newport down the street.
Newport was able to get away, but Charlie slipped as he ran for his life.
Moments later, Marler plunged a large 15cm kitchen knife into his back 'as hard as he could'.
He died less than an hour later.
Marler went on the run and was only caught on June 11.
Manchester Crown Court heard that the two opposing factions had formed after two men, both partners of members of Marler's family and former friends, had fallen out after a drunken row.
Whelan, of Greenacres Road, Oldham, pleaded guilty to violent disorder, and has now been jailed for two years.
Also sentenced was 18-year-old Elliot Matthews, said to be a friend of Marler.
Marler was previously jailed for life to serve a minimum of 16 years, after he was found guilty of murder.
Matthews, of Coalshaw Green Road, Oldham, pleaded guilty to possession of a bladed article after he was seen armed with a Stanley knife. He received a 12 month community order.
"Both offences arose out of the same ugly incident that resulted in the death of Charlie Elms," Judge Patrick Field QC said.
"Neither of you was directly responsible for his death.
"The fatal stabbing of Charlie Elms cannot be wholly separated from the violent disorder that you Melvin Whelan participated in.
"The attack itself lasted for no more than a few seconds.
"Then it was that you Melvin Whelan emerged from the house and participated in a counter attack.
"Your response to what had happened was irresponsible and over the top."
Defending Whelan, David Toal said it the incident was 'impulsive' rather than planned, and came in response to a 'significant' attack.
Whelan has 79 previous offences on his record, but had turned his life around and found work prior to the incident, Mr Toal said.
Members of the group who attended with Charlie are due to be sentenced at a later date.
Macauley McDonald, 26, of Hewart Close, Collyhurst; Frazer McDonald, 20, of Kilton Walk, Collyhurst; Luke Cloran, 18, of Hewart Close, Collyhurst; Josh Newport, 23, of Pollard Street, Ancoats; Kian Bobmanuel, 21, of Emmett Street East, have all pleaded guilty to violent disorder.
Charlie's son Archie was born following his death.
His partner Demi-Leigh O’Shea previously said: "I want the court to know that no matter how the person who did this spends in prison, for me I don't see myself ever feeling better.
"I am lost without Charlie in my life."
