Thug smashes taxi driver's car and steals phone from glovebox

This is the moment a thug smashed the window of a taxi driver's car before making off with his phone.

Ziyad Fathali, 40, from Edge Hill, parked his car at the Liverpool City Council owned car park on Copperas Hill, on Wednesday, January 6, before heading into the city centre. When Ziyad, who works as a taxi driver, came back to his Toyota Auris just after 8pm, he was "really upset" to find the passenger side window had been smashed.

Once he got home he checked his dashcam footage and watched as a man lingered around his car at 6.10pm and threw something at the passenger side window. He then went out of shot before throwing something else and walking away from the vehicle.

The man returned three minutes later and threw something at the passenger side window again before sitting on the wall next to the Toyota. The thug then took something out of his pocket and hit the screen with it, which caused the window to break.

The car alarm was set off and you can hear the man rummaging through the car. The man then ran away from view.

Ziyad told The ECHO: "I park in the Copperas Hill car park whenever I come into town. The first I knew about my car being broken into was when I came back to the car park and saw my window completely smashed.

"I put my phone out of sight in the glove box and nothing was on show, I have no idea how they knew to check in the glove box or that a phone was even in the car. What I find the most frustrating is the exact same thing happened back in May, and from the footage it looks like the same person.

"I'm a taxi driver and I work for my money, or I'm trying to work, so it's really upsetting to have somebody steal something when I work so hard."

Ziyad has been quoted £200 to get his window fixed and will miss three days of work while his car is repaired.

He said: "The car is not safe for passengers so I'm missing out on lots of money. I went back today and saw some other cars also had their windows smashed."

The incident has been reported to Merseyside Police who are investigating.

A spokesperson from Merseyside Police said: "We can confirm we received a report of a theft from a vehicle parked on Copperas Hill. It was reported that the car was broken into at some point between 6pm-8.10pm on Wednesday 4 January and a number of items were stolen.

"Anyone with any information on this incident is asked to contact us @MerPolCC on Twitter, ‘Merseyside Police Contact Centre’ on Facebook or ring 101 with reference 23000013424."
