Throwback Edinburgh grocers snap from the 1950s has locals baffled

An image shared online has left locals with questions, after showing one of the capitals many independent grocers from back in the day.

The snap, which was shared by The Living Memory Association (TheLMA), shows a man in his store in Dalry in 1955. What isn't known, is the name of the shop and the details surrounding it.

TheLMA say images donated to their collection only have as much information as the person who donated it knows, which in this case was very little. They've said no address was given, with 'quite scant' details.

The image is part of the organisations Away for the Messages project which is currently on display in the ground floor of Ocean Terminal. The gallery explores Edinburgh's grocers history, capturing the retail past of the city.

As well as pictures from back in the day, items such as discontinued washing products and other things you wouldn't find on shelves today will be on display.

Posting the image to their Twitter account, TheLMA said: "Our shops & retail reminiscence project 'Away for the Messages' is here! Our ground floor space at Ocean Terminal is chockful of wonderfully nostalgic images like this. Here's a grocer in his Dalry shop in 1950."

Before long, locals were responding. Janet Bee asked: "I asked my mum (Gorgie born). She didn’t recognise the name but said her uncle George Blair had a grocers shop on the corner next to Dalry school. That would have been in the 50s. I’m assuming back in the day there were multiple grocers in each community?"

Bill Marshall added: "What a pity, would be lovely to know. I was born in 1955 in Gorgie and have dim memories of some of the old shops around there which I'd love to refresh."

As of yet, the details surrounding the image have not been discovered - though it's only a matter of time. TheLMA are still looking for contributions from locals in the form of stories, lived experiences and images.
