A three-year-old boy has died after being run over by a bus at an airport in Madrid.
According to local reports, the incident occurred on Friday afternoon, April 1, when the toddler fell onto the road as a bus was passing by.
It is understood that he was sitting on top of a stack of suitcases on a luggage trolley just before the incident happened, and authorities are now looking into how the young boy ended up on the road.
The tragedy occurred at 2:30 pm local time in the bus lane of the arrivals area of Terminal 4 at the Adolfo Suarez Madrid-Barajas Airport.
His mother and grandmother, both Mauritanian nationals, were with him at the time of the incident and have been given temporary accommodation as they await the arrival of family members.
The family’s flight reportedly arrived shortly before they had headed outside of the terminal.
Moments later, the bus on line 200 of the Madrid Municipal Transport Company, arrived to pick up passengers and hit the boy, killing him instantly.
Emergency services were on the scene immediately after the accident and pronounced him dead at the scene.
A Samur psychologist tended to the bus driver who suffered a reported anxiety attack and came to the aid of the child’s mother and grandmother, who were in a state of shock.
Investigations are ongoing.
