Three ways Arsenal can line up against Watford as Mikel Arteta has Emile Smith Rowe dilemma

Arsenal take on Watford today at Vicarage Road, with victory taking Mikel Arteta's men up to fourth place before the Manchester derby.

Should the north Londoners manage to clinch three precious points against the Hornets, it will be the second time this season where they have managed to win four Premier League games in succession.

To apply context and demonstrate how impressive this would be, only the top three sides within the division outside of Arsenal have managed to accumulate twelve points in a row.

Their opponents come into the game on the back of a crucial point taken from Manchester United at Old Trafford.

The Hornets should consider themselves lucky when diving into the general performance as Ralf Rangnick's Red Devils missed numerous clear cut chances to put the game to bed.

But Roy Hodgson will hope that the result will give his side much-needed confidence and certainly they will need to show significant resilience from a defensive point of view if they are to stop Arsenal.

Injury-wise, Arteta confirmed that right back Takehiro Tomiyasu remains in doubt because of a calf injury whereas Emile Smith Rowe is back available after recovering from Covid-19.

With this all in mind, football.london takes a look at three possible ways the Spaniard could field his side.

Consistency in continuity

With Arsenal managing to win their last game against Wolves in the dying embers of the fixture, Arteta may perhaps favour continuity and keep the team as it is, which would mean Gabriel Martinelli retaining his place in the starting XI and Alexandre Lacazette continuing to lead the line for the football club.

Option 1- Ramsdale; Cedric, White, Gabriel, Tierney; Partey, Odegaard, Xhaka; Saka, Lacazette, Martinelli

Smith Rowe inclusion

With Smith Rowe back available, the 21-year-old could be thrown back straight into the team, especially when considering that the former Huddersfield loanee was one of the star performers in his last game, opening the scoring in the club's 2-1 victory over Brentford.

Given the fact that Watford will be deploying a low block, looking to minimise Arsenal's ability to create high volume chances, someone like Smith Rowe, who excels in tight spaces and makes devastating third man runs, could be crucial in unlocking the door.

Option 2- Ramsdale; Cedric, White, Gabriel, Tierney; Partey, Odegaard, Xhaka; Saka, Lacazette, Smith Rowe

Trial of the false nine

Arteta has previously spoken about Smith Rowe being able to play as a striker so this could be the perfect game for it.

This particular dynamic has been tested before last season, in the club's defeat to Villarreal in the Europa League semi-finals.

But the sample size is no way near significant to suggest that it can't work, especially when considering Smith Rowe is great at drifting across the pitch and into various zones, along with possessing the capability of remaining secure between the lines and linking attacks together.

It also gives the former Manchester City coach the opportunity to play a very eye-catching front three.

Option 3- Ramsdale; Cedric, White, Gabriel, Tierney; Partey, Odegaard, Xhaka; Saka, Smith Rowe, Martinelli
