An overpass collapsed onto two vehicles, killing one of the occupants, after being struck by a dump truck on Thursday morning, causing heavy traffic congestion along Bang Na-Trat Road in Samut Prakan.

The incident occurred at 9.15am on the Bangkok-inbound lane at the kilometre marker 34 of Bang Na-Trat Road, also known as Debaratna Road.

Local news media reported that an 18-wheeler dump truck had lifted its carrier, which hit the overhead crossing, causing part of it to collapse.

The concrete structure fell onto the front of the truck and onto the hood of a pickup truck carrying eggs travelling beside it.

The 59-year-old pickup truck driver was found dead at the scene, rescuers said.

The dump truck driver, 65, sustained minor injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital. He was taken into custody for questioning and would face charges, according to police.

Two cranes were used to remove the collapsed overpass section from the road, and it took about three hours for normal traffic to resume.
