Three things we learned as Scotland mount Republic of Ireland comeback in major Nations League boost

Scotland won 2-1 against the Republic of Ireland in their final home UEFA Nations League B Group 1 section

The nation was in a buoyant mood as it came into the game knowing two draws would seal promotion to League A and boost their Euro 2024 hopes following a 3-0 midweek win against Ukraine. But as Tartan Army hero John McGinn made his 50th appearance in navy blue, Stephen Kenny's side struck a major blow when John Egan headed home from a corner.

They had already had the ball in the net via Troy Parrott but it was ruled offside, as Steve Clarke's men were very quickly brought back to earth and told they were in a game. Ex-Celtic pair Jack Hendry levelled things up and Ryan Christie scored from the spot to make sure Scotland sit on 12 points and in first place ahead of the final group encounter with Ukraine. Here is three things we learned from Scotland's latest encounter at Hampden.

Super John McGinn

It's a night the McGinn family won't forget. The Aston Villa midfielder has been inspirational for his country and got the chance to lead them out on his 50th cap.

He's officially in the Tartan Army Hall of Fame. This wasn't his best night on the park but there's little doubting how important he's been.

One step closer

Ireland swept Scotland aside last time out and their tenacious work ethic followed them from Dublin to Glasgow. They made life difficult for their hosts but Clarke's men coped.

They now head to face Ukraine knowing a draw provides a shot at some of the big boys and boosted Euros hopes

Full-back concern

Clarke has a range of full-back's at his disposal - it's just a shame he has four Premier League-quality ones all injured.

Arsenal and former Celtic star Kieran Tierney and Brentford's Aaron Hickey joined captain Andy Robertson and Everton's Nathan Patterson joined the injury list as that area goes from position of strength to very light.
