Three things we learned as Rangers suffer VAR controversy in major Champions League setback

Rangers have it all to do in their Champions League third round qualifier against Union Saint-Gilloise after going down 2-0 in Belgium.

The Light Blues are desperate to reach the group stages of this competition, just like Celtic have, but they made hard work of the first leg. A slow first half did them no favours and eventually they went into the break behind through a Teddy Teuma strike, having created next to nothing in attack at the other end.

Debuts for Ben Davies and Ridvan Yilmaz beckoned as the Light Blues looked to ease defensive worries and spark a change in attacking fortunes.

Instead it was Union who doubled the lead from the spot through Dante Vanzeir and it was very harsh on Connor Goldson, who watched the ball deflect onto his arm from all of a yard at speed. The second leg is next Tuesday at Ibrox and the winner of the tie overall face Monaco or PSV Eindhoven in the play-off round, but there's so much to do for next week's hosts.

Here are three things we learned from the Glasgow club's return to Champions League action.

Number one

If Jon McLaughlin starting between the sticks in Saturday's Premiership opener at Livingston didn't confirm it, this all but certainly did.

Van Bronckhorst has played down the suggestion that he has a number one but his two selections suggest that Allan McGregor is now back-up goalkeeper, with his former deputy the number one.

Video nightmare

It's hard to argue Rangers deserved anything from this but Goldson can deem himself as hard done by with the penalty against him.

After a cross into the box, the ball flicks up and hits his arm following a touch by Davies. He had no time to react but after a video review, the decisive spot-kick was given. A hugely controversial moment in the tie, potentially the goal that knocks last year's Europa League finalists out of the Champions League.

Falling short

Noise at Ibrox is usually a big factor on European nights but it's going to have to be raucous if the Light Blues are to turn this around.

It looked as if the players were trailing through mud, with Union quicker to every ball and tackle. They looked a level above and van Bronckhorst needs to change the tide rapidly.
