Three things we learned as Rangers striker scores goal to remember in comfortable QOTS victory

Rangers are through to the quarter-finals of the Premier Sports Cup after a comfortable 3-1 win over League One side Queen of the South.

It was a dream start for academy striker Robbie Ure, who scored a lovely goal into the bottom corner within 10 minutes of his competitive debut at Ibrox. A big reality check soon beckoned for Giovanni van Bronckhorst's rotated side as a blunder by Fashion Sakala near his own goal allowed Lee Connelly to latch onto his short pass and lob Allan McGregor.

Scott Arfield soon restored Rangers' lead in a game where they handed plenty of youngsters minutes on top of some fringe players getting some action, before then doubling his tally after a free-flowing passing move. They are in the hat for tomorrow's last eight draw and here are three things we learned.

An eye on the derby

It was clear that this match was not viewed as one of Rangers' most important during their relentless run of games.

Van Bronckhorst placed his faith in the deputies and youngsters to get the job done against lower league opposition with 11 changes from their weekend victory versus Ross County, and they duly obliged. Celtic at Parkhead comes next.

The next time?

It was a first outing of the season for last term's number one McGregor in Govan, following his contract extension.

How many more times will he take to the Ibrox turf? It would appear he is their cup goalkeeper this season and this may well be one of the final times he takes to the pitch at Ibrox, albeit it likely isn't the last just yet.

Youngster impressions

Ure took his shot in the starting XI with a well-taken goal. His overall link play and aerial battling was also decent at a time where fellow striker Alfredo Morelos' future is clouded in mystery due to attitude and fitness concerns.

Adam Devine was a livewire up and down the right in place of captain James Tavernier, and Leon King looks to be growing in stature as a central defender. Zak Lovelace and Charlie McCann also got runouts, the latter assisting Arfield's second with a sumptuous backheel. Archie Stevens and Paul Nsio made late cameos.
