Three laboratory made opioids derived from kratom became Schedule I controlled substances on August 26, making it a federal crime to manufacture, sell or possess them. The products most consumers actually encounter in gas stations and smoke shops, concentrated 7-hydroxymitragynine gummies, tablets, and shots, were not covered by that order and remain unscheduled.
The temporary scheduling order covers mitragynine pseudoindoxyl, MGM-15, and MGM-16. It runs through August 26, 2028, with a possible one-year extension. A separate proposal covering 7-OH itself above a concentration threshold has not produced an order as of publication.
