With the popularity of Veganuary continuing to rise – with 2 million people expected to have joined since its launch in 2014 – vegan options have never been more appealing.
According to Plant Based News, 1.5 million people in the UK are now following a plant-based diet and as such, discount website Student Beans have put together a list of the top vegan-friendly cities in the UK for 2022.
Speaking about the list, the team wrote: "Following the launch of the McPlant earlier this year, it looks like the veganism movement will continue to grow. Because let’s face it, if McDonald’s is ‘lovin it’, then it’s probably not going anywhere any time soon.
"With this in mind, we have conducted the dream study for vegan veterans and newbies to uncover the best cities in the UK for vegans.
"From the number of vegan-friendly restaurants available to the average cost of vegan food in the area, no stones have been left unturned for the crowning of the UK’s plant-based royalty."
Edinburgh takes the crown
Three Scottish cities made it into the top 10 with the capital coming out on top overall.
Ranked as the best city for vegans in the UK, Edinburgh is sure to delight plant-based eaters with hundreds of vegan restaurants and 42 Uber Eats options delivering vegan food.
Glasgow takes the 4th spot for having 50 Uber Eats restaurants delivering vegan food in the city. This city also has one of the highest numbers of vegan-friendly restaurants in the area, with a total of 508 having options for plant-based diners.
Inverness also makes it into the top 5 for having a high percentage of restaurants that are vegan friendly (36.41%). However, their lack of plant-based Uber Eats options (3) and health food and supplement shops (2) meant they missed out on the 4th spot, behind Glasgow.
Where other UK cities placed in the top 10
With 135 vegan eat-in restaurants available Chester comes out as one of the best places to eat out if you’re vegan. The city missed out on the top spot due to only having 9 plant-based Uber Eats options.
The study places Nottingham in third place thanks to its high percentage of vegan-friendly restaurants whilst Newcastle, Brighton Cambridge, and Glasgow all tie evenly for fourth place.
The northern powerhouses Manchester and Leeds make it into the top With data finding that 20% of young people are now eating meat-free, it’s great to see these popular destinations doing more to cater for this growing demand.
