Three North West establishments shortlisted for award

Three North West establishments have been shortlisted for a prestigious award.

An Chroi Community Hub, Rossmar Special School and The Multi-Modal Transport Hub have all been shortlisted for the RICS (Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors) Awards 2022.

Based in Derry, An Chroi Community Hub has been shortlisted in the Public Sector Project category.

Rossmar Special School based in Limavady has been shortlisted for the Community Benefit Project and the Multi-Modal Transport Hub in Derry has been shortlisted for the Refurbishment-Revitalisation Project, Infrastructure Project and Heritage Project.

Designed and developed by Doherty Architects, An Chroi Community Hub provides an open space including a creche, youth wing, training spaces and a multi-purpose hall.

The new community centre was funded by Derry City and Strabane District Council and the Department for Communities provides a focal point or gateway to a wider set of developments at the Top of the Hill Park and surrounding area.

The new, state-of-the-art education facility at Rossmar School provides a replacement school for disabled and special educational needs children in Limavady.

Project manager for the redevelopment project Padhraic Murphy says, “Rossmar Special School has been an integral part of the local community for many years.

“What they do for these kids is phenomenal. We wanted to hand over a building that was as close to perfection as we could get. This is truly an extra-special facility.”

The former Waterside railway station is one of the finest examples of Northern Ireland Railway Architecture, reflected in its B1 Listed Status.

Following a stakeholder and community consultation, Translink were enthusiastic about reusing the building for its original purpose as a terminus railway station, reinventing the space into a new active transport hub.

The project has become a concrete piece of community, providing not only a contemporary facility for Translink passengers but also as an open and accessible space for the wider community.

The RICS Awards showcase the most inspirational initiatives and developments in land, real estate, construction and infrastructure. They recognise outstanding achievement, teamwork and companies.

Amongst the other Northern Ireland shortlisted entries are Braidside Integrated Primary School in Ballymena, The Banks in Bangor and The Merchant Square in Belfast and Necarne Castle in Enniskillen.

Chair of the RICS Awards judging panel, Michael Hannaway FRICS, said: “Despite much uncertainty and challenging conditions over the past couple of years, property professionals in Northern Ireland continue to deliver exemplary, and in many cases, world-class built projects that are having a profoundly positive impact on our cities and towns.

“I wish the teams behind them all the best of luck in gaining recognition for their skills and hard work.”
