New Delhi: The three new criminal laws - Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023 (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita 2023 (BNSS) and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam 2023 (BSA) - come into force from today July 1.
These new laws have replaced the Indian Penal Code (IPC), Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) and the Indian Evidence Act (IEA).
Under new criminal laws, summons can now be delivered electronically, speeding up legal procedures, reducing paperwork, and ensuring effective communication among all parties involved.
The new criminal laws will bring in a modern justice system, incorporating provisions such as Zero FIR, online registration of police complaints, summonses through electronic modes such as SMS and mandatory videography of crime scenes for all heinous crimes.
However cases filed before July 1 will be tried under the old laws - IPC, CrPC and IEA. (with Agency inputs)
