Three million households not paid the £150 council tax rebate - how to claim your payment

More than three million households were still waiting to receive their £150 council tax rebate at the start of July, according to a new report.

The cash is being issued to those living in council tax A to D properties to help with the rising cost of bills.

Councils were told to make the payments "as soon as possible from April" although they have until September 30.

A new Freedom of Information request by the BBC reveals 97% of households who pay by direct debit in England and Wales had received the payment, as of July 1.

But only half of those who pay for their council tax in other ways - and typically had to apply to their council to receive the money, rather than getting it automatically - had got the £150.

In Scotland, around 3,000 households in Scotland were waiting for the payment.

A Government spokesperson said: "Councils have been given £28million to deliver the payments, including to set up software and recruit staff, and they have until the end of September to do so.

“We are urging councils to make payments without further delay and have given a host of options to do this quickly and securely - including bank account transfers, council tax account credits or a voucher-based system.”

Who is entitled to the £150 rebate?

Those who live in properties in council tax bands A, B, C or D in England and Wales - roughly 80% of all homes - will receive the rebate.

Scotland residents are also entitled to £150 off if they are in bands A to D - but they'll also qualify for the original rebate if they currently receive Council Tax Support as well.

If you’re in a council tax property with a band E, F, G and H (or I as well, in Wales) you might be able to get support through a separate discretionary fund.

Each council gets to decide who they can help and provide grants too - meaning the criteria does vary depending on where you live.

As an example, we’ve seen some councils in England and Wales offering £150 to those living in council tax bands E to F if they’re claiming a council tax reduction or other benefits, or they’re exempt from paying council tax.

Some councils are also giving out extra money for those households who have received the original £150 rebate as well.

The council tax rebate doesn't need to be paid back.

I haven’t received my £150 council tax rebate

Councils have until September 30 to issue the payments - so the deadline for when they absolutely have to send the cash hasn’t passed yet, although this will be little comfort for families who are struggling right now.

Each council has a dedicated page set up on their website, so your first port of call is to check that out for the latest information on the rebate.

You can find your local council through this page on the Gov.uk website.

Those who pay by direct debit shouldn’t need to apply for the discount, as it should have already been issued to your bank account automatically.

If you haven't received it yet, and your council's website says you should have done so by now, you can call them up to ask for an update.

If you don't pay by direct debit, your council should have written to you by now to explain the next steps.

There will likely be a link on their website where you can apply for the cash.

Some councils have set up deadlines for the £150 council tax rebate.

If your deadline has passed, call your council and ask if there is anything they can do to help you.

Be sure to let them know if you have a genuine reason for missing it - for example, the council didn't write to you, or you were receiving medical treatment.
