Three memorable Newcastle United vs Leeds United clashes ahead of New Year's Eve clash

Leeds United will prepare to travel to St James' Park on New Year's Eve as they face their second straight tough opponent, this time in the form of Newcastle United.

A loss to Manchester City in midweek won't help Jesse Marsch's side's confidence but history might just be on their side with the Whites having lost just once to the Magpies in the last five meetings between the two sides.

Here are three of the most memorable wins in recent memory for the Whites over Newcastle for a bit of pre-game inspiration...

Leeds 5-2 Newcastle - December 16, 2020

Marcelo Bielsa led his side out in their first season back in the Premier League to face Steve Bruce's Magpies but it was the visitors who started off quicker as Jeff Hendrick's effort gave Newcastle the lead after 26 minutes.

But it was Patrick Bamford to bring the Whites level and then strike partner Rodrigo to give them the lead. A 65th-minute equaliser came from Ciaran Clark but it was three goals in the final 15 minutes from Stuart Dallas, Ezgjan Alioski, and Jack Harrison to secure all three points for Leeds.

The win was the first time that the Whites had scored five or more goals in a game against Newcastle United since a 5-1 win in League Division One on 1 September 1971.

Leeds 3-2 Newcastle - September 25, 1999

An Alan Shearer double at Elland Road still wasn't enough to put down the Whites on September 25, 1999 as goals from Lee Bowyer, Harry Kewell and Michael Bridges were enough for all three points.

Bowyer's effort after 11 minutes gave the Whites the lead when Norwegian midfielder Erik Bakke slid a through ball into his path before the Englishman chipped it over Magpies goalkeeper Steve Harper into the back of the net.

Kewell made it 2-0 after 39 minutes but two goals from Shearer put the result into jeopardy. However, Bridges - who had already hit the crossbar and had seen other chances throughout the match go begging - finally found the back of the net 13 minutes from time.

Leeds 4-1 Newcastle - October 18, 1997

October 18, 1997 will be a date long in the memory of Leeds fans, especially when this matchup rolls around twice every season. Two goals in the space of eight first-half minutes from Bruno Ribeiro and Harry Kewell earned the Whites a 2-0 lead after 38 minutes.

An own goal from Newcastle defender John Beresford meant it was 3-0 at half-time but that lead was extended to four just two minutes after the break.

David Wetherall's 47th-minute thumping header at the back post meant it was all but certain that the Whites would win the match but a consolation goal from Keith Gillespie meant there was no clean sheet for the Whites.
