Three Manchester United youngsters sign new contracts

Prolific academy forwards Joe Hugill and Charlie McNeil have both signed new long-term contracts at Manchester United, while goalkeeper Paul Woolston has penned a one-year deal.

Hugill has made two appearances off the bench in United's pre-season friendlies so far and he spent last week training with the first-team at the camp at Pennyhill Park in Surrey.

The 17-year-old scored 10 goals for United's Under-23s in Premier League 2 last season, stepping up to that level after scoring six in six for the Under-18s. He joined from Sunderland last summer and has already made a positive impression on academy staff, which has led to his first-team promotion for the early weeks of pre-season.

Hugill's ascension to the Under-23s came thanks to injuries ahead of him but boss Neil Wood was pleased with his impact last season.

"Joe came in, did quite well, played against Blackburn, scored two goals from two chances in what was quite a frustrating game, again another physical game," he said at the end of last season.

"He took his chances and then we went to Rochdale in the EFL [Trophy] after that and he did really well, we drew 0-0 but he did really well. Rochdale defended pretty much with a back five and gave us respect with how they set up, but it was a difficult night to try and break that down, but Joe did really well, he was holding up the ball well, he was bringing his teammates into play, we could play off him, so we were pleased when he first came up with his initial performances."

While Hugill has been involved with the seniors this summer, McNeil and Woolston have been preparing for the new season with the rest of the academy squad at a training camp in Edinburgh.

Droylsden-born McNeil, 17, returned to United from Manchester City last summer, having previously left the club as a schoolboy. He was a prolific goalscorer for City's academy sides, scoring more than 600 goals at youth level, and he's found the back of the net 25 times in 23 games for United's Under-18s so far.

While Hugill and McNeil have signed long-term deals, Woolston, 22, has signed a one-year extension. He's made 13 appearances for United's Under-23s signed joining from Newcastle United in 2018 and will be part of Neil Wood's squad again for the forthcoming season.

The Under-23s face Stalybridge Celtic in a pre-season friendly on Tuesday and will begin their Premier League 2 campaign against Leicester City on August 16.
