Three key battles Leeds United must win against Aston Villa

Leeds United will be looking to return to winning ways when they travel to Aston Villa on Wednesday night.

Marcelo Bielsa's side were last in action on Saturday, January 23 as the Whites fell to a dissapointing 1-0 defeat against struggling Newcastle United at Elland Road.

After being knocked out of the FA Cup by West Ham United last month, the Whites didn't have a fixture at the weekend, leaving over two weeks between matches due to the winter break.

Meanwhile, Villa are in a similar boat after they crashed out of the competition at Manchester United and last featured when they secured a 1-0 win over Everton.

It's poised to be a fascinating tactical encounter between the two sides at Villa Park, as Steven Gerrard prepares to take on Bielsa for the first time in his managerial career.

Leeds Live have taken a look three key battles to watch out for.

Raphinha vs Lucas Digne

This has the potential to be a really intriguing battle, as Villa's new £25million left-back Lucas Digne goes up against Brazilian international Raphinha on the Leeds right-hand side.

Digne has impressed in the two matches since he made the move from Everton in the transfer window, assisting Emiliano Buendia's winner at Goodison Park and he has also proven to be a threat from open play.

However, Raphinha is currently the Whites' top scorer this season with eight goals and will arguably give Digne his toughest one-v-one challenge in a Villa shirt.

The Leeds winger, who has been linked with a move to Liverpool and Bayern Munich, could cause Digne some issues with his pace and skill, which may also see Buendia to drop back and help his teammate.

John McGinn vs Mateusz Klich

The midfield battle is crucial in every game but Leeds need to ensure they dominate this area of the pitch to have any chance of getting a positive result.

This is due to the quality Villa possess in attacking areas, with Phillipe Coutinho, Buendia and Ollie Watkins all expected to start and McGinn is key to unlocking the door with some neat forward passes.

McGinn generally plays as the box-to-box no.8 in Gerrard's side alongside Douglas Luiz, but Mateusz Klich will likely have the job of marking the Scotland international and ensuring he has little time on the ball to pick a pass.

With Kalvin Phillips still out and Adam Forshaw a doubt for the game, Klich's energy is going to be vital and he must press McGinn and minimise the space for the Villa man to control the match in that right channel of the Leeds midfield.

Ollie Watkins vs Diego Llorente

With just five Premier League goals to his name, it's safe to say Ollie Watkins has failed to recapture the same form he produced during his first top-flight season where he netted 14 times across all competitions.

Although the 26-year-old has struggled in front of goal, he is still a major threat with his pace and will cause any defence problems when he's at it.

Diego Llorente martialled Watkins excellently in the two games against Villa last term but he will have to at his best to stop the former Brentford man again this time around.

The Spain international has been impressive since returning to the Leeds side after a long injury lay-off and will be crucial to keep out Watkins, who has been revitalised under Gerrard.
