The incident occurred on the Mumbai–Pune Expressway near the Bhatan tunnel, where the students’ car crashed into a container truck around 8:35 am. The group had reportedly spent the night at Bandra Kurla Complex before heading towards Lonavala to catch the sunrise.
According to preliminary reports, the students were traveling in a rented Volkswagen Polo as part of a group of six. While returning to Mumbai, the vehicle—driven by Omkumar Nitin Borse—attempted to overtake a container truck near the Panvel exit. During the maneuver, the car collided with the rear of the truck, resulting in a devastating impact. The force of the crash caused the vehicle to flip multiple times, leaving it severely mangled.
