Three chip shops in Greater Manchester have been crowned some of the best in the country.
The Fish at Goose Green in Wigan, The Little Chippy in Tyldesley, and Chips @ No.8 in Prestwich have all made it onto the UK's 50 Best Takeaways list compiled by Fry Magazine, the go-to publication for everything fish and chips. After months of taste-testers sampling thousands of portions of fish and chips from across the country, the publication was finally able to narrow the list down to the 50 best takeaways.
Shops were graded by mystery judges on their cleanliness, staff knowledge and professionalism, and their social media presence, as well as the all important food score. Each shop was given a score out of 100, and to make the top 50 list shops needed to score a massive 96 - meaning each chippy named really had to knock the judge's socks off for a spot.

Reece Head, competition organiser, said: “We’re so pleased to announce this year’s winners. The awards recognise and celebrate the hard work, passion and dedication that these operators put into running their businesses. It’s been a tough couple of years for the industry, in particular for restaurants that have had to deal with closures.
"But operators continued to adapt, motivate their workforce and invest in new equipment and systems that have seen them come out the other side stronger and in a better position. Fish and chip takeaways have really had to up their game over the past year in order to handle the growing number of click and collect and delivery orders generated as a result of Covid and integrate these new ways of working with their walk-in customers.

“Whether operating from a bricks and mortar site or a mobile van, these operators are working against a background of increasing costs, labour shortages and rising VAT. Yet they have continued to invest in their premises, their staff and their processes to ensure fish and chips remains a top quality, value for money takeaway. Our 50 Best Takeaway and 10 Best Restaurant winners really do represent the best in the business and they continue to showcase fish and chips as a high quality, value for money meal.”
All three chippies also earned a spot on the list last year, whilst The Fish at Goose Green has now been named one of the best chippies in the country for three years running. Dan Edwards, Owner of Chips @ No.8, said: “To have made the list two years running is an incredible achievement and the whole team can be very proud of themselves. We try to provide all our customers with a great all round experience every time they visit and that means we have to be continually on top of our game.
"We use only the finest, locally sourced ingredients, we fry in beef dripping and our fish is delivered fresh every day, caught in UK waters by UK fisheries. You can taste the freshness and it really makes a difference”
All takeaways named on the list will be given their mystery diner's report which will identify the best parts of their business, and a winner's poster and plaque to display in the shop.
