Three Glasgow 'perfect winter playground' spots to enjoy this Christmas

The National Trust For Scotland has revealed three 'perfect winter playground' destinations across Glasgow that it encourages the public to visit during the season.

With December just around the corner, there is no better time to take in Scotland's natural and manmade wonders. The National Trust for Scotland has confirmed that some of its properties across Glasgow will remain open this winter, so there's plenty of time to soak in the "magical" atmosphere.

Whether you are a keen walker and want to breathe in the fresh Scottish winter air, or would rather learn about local history in the comfort of an indoor setting, there is something for everyone in Glasgow.

National Trust for Scotland’s Regional Director for the South and West region Ian McLelland said: “Winter in Glasgow is a truly magical time of year, and the National Trust for Scotland’s properties are the perfect place to experience this wonderful season. Our heritage means visitors can explore this part of the country with a fun family day out, a fresh winter walk or by exploring one of our stunning properties.

"At the Trust we pride ourselves on creating memorable experiences. We provide access to nature, beauty and heritage for everyone, and visiting our properties is a great way for people to support our charitable aims.

"Winter really is the perfect season to discover everything that Scotland has to offer, and in the process help us to conserve it.”

Here is a rundown of three destinations in and near Glasgow that the National Trust for Scotland is encouraging the public to check out this winter.

Pollok House

Pollok House is luxurious both inside and out (National Trust for Scotland)

This opulent stately home is the perfect place to get away from the winter cold and heat up with an afternoon tea and a cake. If you head there before Christmas with young ones, they'll be able to take part in festive games and a trail through the house where they will meet Mrs Claus herself.

Pollok House also includes a spectacular collection of Spanish art, as well as works by Raeburn and Guthrie. There really is something for everyone.

Ben Lomond

Nothing beats a winter hike, and Ben Lomond is one of very best places to do it (National Trust for Scotland)

If you're keen to do something a bit more daring, then the National Trust of Scotland recommends Ben Lomond. With easy access from Glasgow and stunning winter views, it's no surprise that it's among the most popular of all the Munros.

There are routes geared towards both novice and experienced hikers, so no matter what your skill level you will be able to take in the picturesque sights of Loch Lomond. Make sure you dress appropriately though, with winter boots and warm clothes.

The Tenement House

A trip to The Tenement House will make you think you've stepped back in time (National Trust for Scotland)

If the Christmas season has you in the mood to step back in time, then The Tenement House is your best bet. On first look, it appears to be a run-of-the-mill middle-class tenement.

However, step inside and you will see that it is a perfectly preserved time capsule of early 20th century life in Glasgow. Its four rooms are all teeming with antiques and historical curios that make history come alive.
