Three Dublin restaurants hit by closure orders over food safety breaches

Three Dublin city centre restaurants were closed for the breach of food safety regulations last month.

A closure order was served on Lee Kee Chinese restaurant on 100a Parnell Street on September 27, 2022. Some of the reasons for the closure orders included no cold water supply, food debris and grease found embedded on equipment and surfaces including the floor and walls, lack of training resources for staff, and more.

The closure order is yet to be lifted at the time of writing. Separately, two other Dublin restaurants were closed after pest control issues were found by FSAI inspectors.

Bow Lane Restaurant on 17 Aungier Street was hit by a closure order on September 22, 2022 after inspectors found rodent droppings all over the restaurant which led to the risk of food being contaminated with pathogenic bacteria. The order was lifted on September 27, 2022.

The third restaurant that was closed was Rustic Stone on 17 South Great George's Street on September 15, 2022. Rodent droppings were found in a cavity wall behind cooking appliances and behind a hot hold unit. The closure order was lifted the following day.

Dr Pamela Byrne, Chief Executive, FSAI, said that a lack of pest control procedures is unacceptable. She added: "It is a legal requirement for all food businesses to have a robust food safety management system in place that also ensures a high level of pest control. However, time after time, environmental health officers are finding incidents of rodent infestations.

"All food businesses have a legal obligation to ensure that the food they are processing, serving or selling is safe to eat at all times. Consumers have a right to safe food and we would urge anyone who is concerned or suspect there is unusual activity being demonstrated by a food business, to contact us via our online complaint form and we will investigate."
