Three dead including two marine volunteers after rescue boat capsizes in Australia

  • Three people, including two marine volunteers, died after a rescue boat capsized off Ballina, New South Wales, Australia.
  • The incident occurred on Monday evening when a Marine Rescue NSW vessel overturned while attempting to assist a yacht in distress near the notoriously hazardous Ballina bar.
  • The two deceased volunteers were aged 78 and 62, while the body of the third man, in his mid-50s, was found nearby; he was not wearing a life jacket.
  • The rescue crew had set out in "very severe conditions" with a 2.5m swell, leading to the capsizing of their "fit for purpose" vessel.
  • Police are investigating the incident, including how the distressed yacht came to be near the breakwall before it sank.
