Three cities named most likely to see a White Christmas this year

Experts have named three cities that are most likely to see a White Christmas in 2022, but have warned that snow this year is much less likely overall than it was in 2021. Glasgow, Edinburgh and Newcastle are all 3/1 favourites to see snow on December 25, according to Gambling .com.

The site has just launched its White Christmas 2022 page where Glasgow is the current 3/1 favourite UK City to see snow on Christmas day – Cardiff is a little further down the odds table with current odds of 6/1 to see a White Christmas. The page will be regularly updated as weather patterns change in the run-up to Christmas.

Joe Short, Gambling.com Analyst, said: "Betting sites believe the odds of a white Christmas in 2022 are less likely than they were last year as forecasters predict wet and windy weather ahead for the United Kingdom.

"There’s nothing more magical than waking up on Christmas day to see a smattering of snow falling outside your window. But Gambling.com can reveal that the UK could miss out on snowfall this year, after parts of Scotland were treated to the white stuff in 2021.

"The slight reduction in the chances of a white Christmas this year is perhaps understandable. The UK endured an uncharacteristically hot summer and has been treated to a deluge of rain in October, which has caused flash floods in the south east. High pressure is expected to eventually envelop the country at the beginning of winter but the Met Office has warned that might not last long, with a return to wet and windy conditions in January."

Heavy rain is expected to continue drenching parts of the UK for now though after a wet and windy night prompted weather warnings across swathes of the country.

Blustery showers, thunder and strong winds are set to hit western areas from Tuesday morning.

The Met Office said that despite weather remaining “unsettled”, the harsh conditions from Monday night – when gusts of 60-70mph were seen in Cornwall, Devon and west Wales – would subside.

Showers and wind are expected to continue on Wednesday but ease later in the week, giving way to breezier and drier conditions.

The longest Met Office forecast currently runs up to December 6 and reads: "A high-pressure system looks likely to settle to the west or northwest of the UK towards the end of the month, bringing more extended periods of dry and settled weather with lighter winds.

"Rain and stronger winds could still be experienced, especially in the far northwest. Into December, eastern areas could see a return to wetter conditions, with occasional frost and overnight fog, that could be slow to clear.

"Temperatures trending towards average for the season, perhaps feeling rather cold."
