A three-car crash on the A19 saw a Fiat 500 end up on its roof and two people treated for minor injuries.
The incident caused disruption on the A19 between the Holystone and Silverlink roundabouts. Police officers are understood to remain on the scene and the carriageway has one lane blocked.
Northumbria Police confirmed the force had been alerted to the incident shortly before 6pm.

A police spokesperson said: "There was a three-vehicle road traffic collision. A Fiat 500 ended up on its roof. The initial reports came at 5.55pm. There have been minor injuries."
A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called by the police at 17.55pm today to attend a road traffic collision involving three vehicles on the A19 southbound carriageway near to Silverlink.
"We dispatched three paramedic ambulance crews who treated two patients for head and neck injuries before being taken to hospital."
