Threave Rovers boss Vinnie Parker hailed his side’s character after they thumped BSC Glasgow.
The Castle Douglas side remain second in the West of Scotland League’s fourth division after a tricky away day ended in a 5-1 win.
Parker said: “It was more a test of our character. It was probably one of the worst environments to play football in – the pitch wasn’t great, there were no showers and we had to change inside a hall.
“It was a day for characters and leaders and we have them in abundance just now.
“Graham Wright made a great save, Hugh Cameron is probably playing some of the best football of his life just now, Danny Dunglinson was an unbelievable captain on Saturday in terms of leadership and Dylan Cairnie was absolutely outstanding.
“They could easily have gone up there and felt like they didn’t fancy it, they shouldn’t be playing there – I probably did it myself in my playing days. The boys’ attitude was absolutely tremendous as was the performance.”
Cairnie fired Threave into an early lead, Lewis Todd getting the second just before the break.
And they made it three with seconds of the half remaining, Dean Brotherston scoring a tremendous long-range effort.
The hosts rallied after the break and reduced the deficit but Brotherston restored the advantage before Lewis Sloan rounded things off.
The only downside was Ross Thomson suffering a serious injury that led to him having to be substituted.
Parker said: “Ross has put his head in where most of us probably wouldn’t put our feet! It was brilliant bravery to win a header in the opposition box. That’s the kind of desire we’re asking for.
“He’s picked up a nasty gash on the side of his head. He wanted to get back on but the cut was too deep so he had it glued. Hopefully he’s back on Saturday.
“BSC were quite sharp and physical up front and we managed them well. Stuart Douglas was absolutely exceptional, like he has been all season, and he dealt with their threat well. They scored a decent goal but we scored straight away. This time last year we’d probably have been in bother, you’d have been looking at a scrap on our hands, but we put a pen through it and scored straight away.”
The Castle Douglas side defeated Whitletts Victoria in the third round on Wednesday.
