CHOOSING a university is an exciting time in a person's life and on Saturday, August 31 more than 5,000 people will explore the University of Newcastle.

The Callaghan and City campuses will open from 9am to 3pm, offering interactive demonstrations, talks and tours to those visiting and learning about what study and entry options are available.

A group of First Nations high school students will make the trip down from Tamworth, organised by the University of Newcastle Department of Rural Health in partnership with Gomeroi Culture Academy.

"This is a great opportunity for these young leaders in the Gomeroi Culture Academy to see what university can offer, and explore the possibilities of pursuing a tertiary education," Gomeroi Culture Academy director Marc Sutherland said.

Port Macquarie year 12 student Jack Davies is also making the trek down the coast to explore the campus and get a taste of university life in Newcastle.

"I'm hoping to study a Bachelor of Science majoring in physics, and studying at the University of Newcastle would be my dream, so I've already applied through the Early Entry Program," he said.

Students completing year 12 this year like Jack, can apply to study at the university for free through the Early Entry Program, which allows students to receive entry to university before sitting final exams.

With nine out of 10 jobs in the future needing a tertiary education, University of Newcastle Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Alex Zelinsky encouraged people to come along to the open day.

"A university education is an investment that will reap benefits for a lifetime," he said.

"Whether you're thinking of studying or just curious about what we do here at the university, you'll be welcome. If you are interested in studying at university, we'll be able to show you the way to reach your goals."

The latest graduate outcome survey shows that over 90 per cent of UON undergraduate and almost 95 per cent of postgraduate students are employed within four months of graduation.

Visitors are encouraged to register at www.newcastle.edu.au/open-day and plan ahead to make the most out of the program of events.

A free shuttle bus will run every half hour between Callaghan and Newcastle City campuses from 9am-3pm.
