Nearly 300,000 people have responded to a Facebook invite for a mock leaving party for Boris Johnson at 10 Downing Street tonight (July 8). Mr Johnson - who was fined by police for attending his birthday party at No.10 during lockdown - announced his resignation as Prime Minister this week.
The 'Boris Johnson leaving party/work event' invite has been launched on the social media playform by Hartlepool singer Howie Scarborough. It mocks Mr Johnson's claims he did not know the events he attended during Covid restrictions were parties.
More than 58,000 people say they are going to the 'party'. Meanwhile, more than 229,000 say they are interested. People are encouraged to 'bring cake'.
One person, who said they are attending, commented: "But how will he actually know it's a party?" Another added: "Can we confirm this is a party and not a work meeting?"
'Party' organiser Mr Scarborough told My London: "I thought it would be funny to create a spoof event as an echo of the Downing Street parties - and as a protest and jibe at Mr Johnson for the incessant lies and hypocrisy during the lockdowns." He hit out at the party culture within Downing Street "while millions suffered by not being able to see loved ones, attend funerals".
The Facebook event follows a proud tradition of fake leaving parties for departing Prime Ministers. In 2019, one Londoner organised 'Theresa May leaving drinks' for her less than a week after she was forced to stand down.
