Thornhill family smash fundraising target with festive light display

A Thornhill family smashed a festive fundraising target with a stunning display of thousands of lights at their Queensberry Brae home.

Andy and Lynn Ross, and their daughter Skye, encourage people to visit their lights show during the December evenings and ask for a small donation for a chosen charity of the year.

This Christmas they wanted to raise £500 for Dumfries and Galloway Blood Bikes and, with the last switch-on taking place on Sunday, they have been packing their displays away until next year and counting the cash this week.

A delighted Mr Ross said: “Many thanks to everyone who came along and enjoyed the lights this year and also to everyone who donated to this year’s charity.

“We have managed to make a grand total of £2,170 which will be on its way to Dumfries and Galloway Blood Bikes.”

The displays, built up over many years, were a popular feature in the local community and attracted onlookers from far and wide.

As well as the lights, they also had a Santa’s letter box for children to post their lists, with Father Christmas replying to each one.

The family decided to go ahead with their fundraising despite a huge hike in electricity costs – which they fund themselves.

The unit price for electricity more than doubled as, in recent years, it cost about £11 per day to run the lights which, for 35 days, was around £385 in total, but their bill this year is expected to be around £770.

Through the years the lights show has helped them support a number of charities with Moffat Mountain Rescue Team receiving £1,815 from donations given in Christmas 2021.
