Thomas Tuchel set to make managerial return as Todd Boehly faces Graham Potter Chelsea decision

Thomas Tuchel could be set to make his return to management at a former club over six months after being sacked by Chelsea. A few days after his dismissal, Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital brought in Graham Potter from Brighton, but the 47-year-old is now under significant pressure following the Blues' defeat to Southampton in the Premier League on Saturday.

Results have been poor for Chelsea under Potter with nine wins, seven draws and eight losses occurring from his 24 games in charge across four different competitions. Recent form has been the major issue with only two of those seven victories arriving since the resumption of the season after the World Cup.

Two 1-0 defeats in the last week against Borussia Dortmund and a managerless Southampton has seen calls for Potter to be sacked increase, with a number of managers tipped to replace him.

Mauricio Pochettino remains the current favourite with the bookies to replace Potter, while possible returns to Stamford Bridge for Tuchel, Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte are all included in the latest odds. Mourinho is currently in charge at AS Roma and while Conte is seemingly unsettled at Tottenham following a difficult year personally, a management return to Italy is more likely.

Those two names being removed leaves just Tuchel on the list of former Blues managers to take over but he could also be crossed off the list. According to Evening Standard, Paris Saint-Germain are ready to re-appoint Thomas Tuchel and would be willing to admit their mistake in sacking him in the first place.

The French giants are said to have grown frustrated by recent results under Christoph Galtier with PSG out of the Coupe de France and currently 1-0 down from the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie with Bayern Munich.

Tuchel fell out significantly with PSG sporting director Leonardo Araujo and was subsequently sacked on Christmas Day 2020. The German head coach was then appointed manager at Stamford Bridge just a month later following the dismissal of Chelsea legend Frank Lampard.

In his first season, Tuchel won the Champions League with Chelsea and guided the Blues to a third-placed Premier League finish in the following campaign. However, he was relieved of his duties just four weeks into the 2022/23 season after Chelsea lost three of their opening seven games.

Speaking at a SALT conference last year, Boehly explained why Tuchel was dismissed. "When you take over any business you have to make sure you are aligned with the people in the business," he said. "And Tuchel is obviously extremely talented and obviously someone who had great success with Chelsea.

"Our vision for the club was to find a manager who really wanted to collaborate with us. Our goal is to bring a team together; all of that needs to be a well-oiled machine. The reality of our decision was that we weren't sure that Thomas saw it the same way we saw it.

"No one is right or wrong. We just didn't have a shared vision for the future. It wasn't about Zagreb. It was about the shared vision of what we wanted Chelsea to look like. It wasn't a decision that was made because of a single win or loss. It was a decision that we thought was the right vision for the club."

A return to PSG for Tuchel still faces many complications although he would now be working with Luis Campos as opposed to Leonardo. To reunite with his former employers, he would also need assurances that the club will back him in certain situations to prevent player power if necessary and that he is allowed to just focus on coaching, without too much involvement in transfer market activity.

Tuchel being appointed by PSG would tick one name off the list of possible managers Boehly could appoint, although a return to Stamford Bridge is thought to be impossible. The new owners remain behind Potter and grew frustrated with the German’s approach to their proposed working culture.
