Thomas Tuchel's first words as Chelsea become world champions in dramatic fashion

Chelsea this evening clinched the FIFA Club World Cup after beating Palmeiras 2-1 after extra time.

The Blues took the lead in the 55th minute courtesy of Romelu Lukaku, with Callum Hudson Odoi delivering a peach of a cross for the Belgium international.

However, it didn't take Palmeiras long to level the game as Thiago Silva was penalised for a handball in the 62nd minute, with Raphael Veiga converting the spot-kick.

Chelsea created plenty of chances to win the game but extra time was forced.

Thomas Tuchel's men continued to push for a winner and in the 117th minute their efforts were rewarded as the Londoners were handed a penalty following another handball incident.

Champion's League hero Kai Havertz stepped up and didn't disappoint, putting his side ahead and the German's goal proved to be the difference.

It's yet another honour added to the growing trophy cabinet and it's fair to say Tuchel was delighted with the result before saying how happy he is to be part of what the club has just achieved.

“In the end, if you score late you need luck to do it but we were relentless and we did not stop trying,” Tuchel said.

“We did not give in. We had the lead then lost it but never stopped. It was deserved but also lucky when you score late.

“The penalty does not look nervous [from Kai Havertz] but for sure he was. We trusted the statistics and I’m happy for him.

“I’m a part of it and I’m happy to have the chance. We said before in the dressing room ‘what an opportunity’.

“We all dream to have finals like this. There are no regrets. There are still things to win and it never stops.”
