Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has confirmed Mason Mount suffered an injury during Saturday’s Club World Cup Final win over Palmeiras.
The England midfielder last only half an hour of the 2-1 win in Abu Dhabi and is thought to have picked up a fresh injury, having also had to come off during Chelsea’s narrow win over Plymouth Argyle in the FA Cup prior to heading to Abu Dhabi.
Timo Werner replaced Mount as Chelsea were taken the distance by the Brazilian outfit, winning in extra-time through a Kai Havertz penalty after Raphael Vega had cancelled out Romelu Lukaku’s header during regulation time.
Mount has already missed four games through injury this season in a relatively frustrating time of things in recent weeks.
“In one of the very first scenes he made a run to the second post with Cesar Azpilicueta and they fell and his opponent fell on his ankle and he hurt his ligaments badly,” said Tuchel.
“So we’ll have to see. He came straight to me and said it does not feel good, it feels very stiff and painful, and he did not know if he can continue so we had to make the decision.”
