Thomas Tuchel makes brilliant "seven-seater" bus vow in response to Chelsea crisis

Thomas Tuchel vowed to drive a bus to Lille after his side shrugged off government sanctions to see off Newcastle.

Chelsea have been handed a reduced budget for away travel and, ahead of the second leg of the club’s Champions League knockout stage tie on Tuesday, Tuchel said: “I think practically what’s changed is more for the guys who for example organised the journey to Lille because they had to figure out how we were arriving there.

"My last information was that we are getting a plane. So we can go by plane and come back by plane. If not, we'll go by train. If not, we'll go by bus. If not, I'll drive a seven-seater!

“Honestly, I will do it. You can mark my words, I will do it to arrive there.

"If you’d asked me 20 or 30 years ago, to be in charge of a Champions League match what I was willing to do, I'd say: 'Ok, where do I have to be and when?'

“Why should this change? I will be there and we will be there. Of course, organisation wise, there are some negotiations going on and talks, but it doesn't influence me.”

Kai Havertz netted in the 89th minute to extend the Blues winning run to six from their last seven games.

The victory was Chelsea’s first since Russian owner Roman Abramovich was sanctioned by the UK government and disqualified as a director by the Premier League.

Tuchel added: “Kai’s goal was exceptional.

"When we played football during corona [the pandemic] we knew we couldn't cure the virus. But we tried to give some hope so people could feel joy, excitement, maybe even anger and entertainment. This is what we try to do now. The matter is very serious."

Meanwhile, Havertz’s 89th-minute strike condemned Newcastle to their first defeat in nine Premier League games. It leaves them 14th, 10 points clear of the relegation zone.

Eddie Howe fumed afterwards at the refusal of referee David Coote to award his side a penalty when Trevoh Chalobah grabbed Jacob Murphy's shirt.

He said: “I’m hugely disappointed with that decision. It is a clear penalty. Even if he doesn’t give it, the VAR should at least ask him to go and look at the screen to review the decision.”

Howe also refused to discuss Saudi Arabia’s human rights record with Newcastle’s ownership came back under scrutiny with Chelsea’s.

It came as Saudi Arabia revealed it executed 81 men on Saturday - more than the whole of last year.

Newcastle fans also sported the Saudi Arabia flag in the away end but Howe rejected a string of questions on his bosses, the Saudi Arabian-backed Public Investment Fund (PIF).

He said: “I’m just going to answer questions on the football.

“I’m well aware of what’s going on around the world but my job is to coach the football team and to get results for the football team.”

Human rights organisations have questioned the rights of many to a fair trial in Saudi Arabia, an allegation the government rejects. The 81 people killed on Saturday was 12 more than the 69 during 2021.

But, pressed further, Howe added: “I think I’ve made my position clear. I’m just going to answer questions on that and not football.”
