Thomas Tuchel confirms Chelsea interest in Robert Lewandowski and rates transfer chances

Thomas Tuchel has confirmed Chelsea are keen on Robert Lewandowski - even though their chances are slim.

Mirror Sport revealed earlier this week that the Blues have registered their interest in the Bayern Munich marksman who scored 50 goals in all competitions last season..

But Lewandowski’s first choice is Barcelona with the 33-year-old Poland international keen for a new challenge after a decade in Germany.

Blues boss Tuchel said: “I don’t think we have a chance for Lewandowski but if there is a chance…he is one of the best number 9s.

“But first of all it does not make sense that I comment about players from other teams and I will not start doing it. But of course there are top number nines out there but we are happy with what we have at the moment.”

Despite their stunning acquisition of Raheem Sterling this week, Chelsea know they will need goals this season following their struggles over the last two campaigns and with Liverpool and Manchester City bringing in more firepower.

But Tuchel played down the urgency adding: “We have Timo Werner as a nine, we have Kai Havertz as a nine, we have Michy Batshuayi as a number nine, we have Armando Broja as a nine and Raheem Sterling as a nine, maybe, so let’s see how things work out.”

Barcelona remain favourites to land Lewandowski who shot Bayern to their eighth German title in ten years last season. The frontman also led them to the Champions League two years ago.

Bayern - who have fought in vain to keep their prize asset - want £42million up front.

But the Spanish giants’ financial situation posing a problem, allowing Chelsea and PSG to make their moves in the hope that they could tempt Lewandowski to the Premier League or the French league respectively.

The player is understood to be open to both moves while Tuchel, now jetting to Las Vegas for the second leg of the club’s US tour, would see him as a better fit for the side he is rebuilding than 37-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo.

In their last four seasons, Lewandowski has scored 193 times.
