Thomas Partey, Gabriel Jesus, Granit Xhaka – Updated Arsenal return dates after last 16 exits

Arsenal are swiftly seeing their World Cup participants fall out of the competition as the quarter-finals approach. The conclusion of the Round of 16 saw Portugal, Morocco, England, France, Brazil, Argentina, Netherlands and Croatia progress to the next stage.

This meant Matt Turner, Takehiro Tomiyasu and Granit Xhaka all saw their World Cup runs come to an end. Arsenal allowed 10 days of rest for players who did not travel to Qatar after the last weekend of Premier League action and could allow similar time for recovery.

Arsenal will take part in the Dubai Super Cup alongside Lyon, AC Milan and Liverpool. The remaining squad are already out in the Middle East working on getting back to full fitness ahead of the return of domestic football on Boxing Day; football.london provides the updated return dates of those who are yet to re-join after the last 16 exits.

Thomas Partey

Ghana were knocked out in the group stage and therefore Thomas Partey could return to the group after his 10-day break on December 12, a day before the friendly against AC Milan in Dubai.

Matt Turner

The Netherlands defeated the USA 3-1 in the last-16 clash as Matt Turner’s World Cup ended after some strong displays for the USMNT. A 10-day break would see the goalkeeper return on December 13, the day of the Milan friendly.

Ben White

Ben White left the England camp due to personal reasons and is not expected to re-join the group. There has yet to be an update on his return.

Takehiro Tomiyasu

Japan lost on penalties to Croatia in the last 16. An emotional Takehiro Tomiyasu said after the match that he wanted to ‘forget football’ for a period and rest and he is expected to return should he take the 10-day break on December 15, two days before the friendly at the Emirates against Juventus.

Gabriel Jesus

Gabriel Jesus has returned to London after suffering a knee injury with Brazil. He underwent successful surgery but football.london understands that it is too soon to put a return date on the striker’s availability.

Granit Xhaka

Switzerland were well beaten by Portugal 6-1 in the last 16. The defeat eliminates Granit Xhaka who revealed after the game his plan to waive any potential holiday allowance. "I’m flying back to Dubai, going back to the team, and going back to the training and trying to forget the tournament now," he said after the match.

William Saliba, Bukayo Saka, Aaron Ramsdale and Gabriel Martinelli

The remaining trio are still involved in World Cup action with England and Brazil. Bukayo Saka is expected to start against France but Aaron Ramsdale will be on the bench along with opponent William Saliba.

Gabriel Martinelli is a regular feature from the bench under Brazil manager Tite. He will likely come on as an option in their quarter-final match with Croatia.
