Thomas Muller has revealed he turned down an “insane offer” to join Manchester United during Louis van Gaal’s time in charge of the club.
Muller has been a regular name linked with a move to the Premier League over the years, although nothing has ever materialised. The 32-year-old has remained at Bayern Munich throughout his career, and looks likely to end his playing days at the Allianz Arena after recently extending his contract.
The forward has enjoyed a remarkably successful period at Bayern, having surpassed Bastian Schweinsteiger’s record of 26 for the most trophies of a German international. Despite his run of silverware, Muller has come close to leaving the Bavarian giants on a few occasions.

Muller revealed in an interview with Merkur he considered making an exit during three different periods of his career. One such time presented him with an opportunity to reunite with his former Bayern boss Van Gaal at United, but the Bundesliga club held firm.
“Bayern clearly rejected the whole thing - despite this insane offer from United,” Muller said. “[But it was a] huge vote of confidence from Bayern.”
United aren’t the only club to have shown an interest in Muller over the years, although the chances of the 2014 World Cup winner moving on look to be slim now after he extended his stay at Bayern. The 32-year-old will remain at the Allianz Arena until the summer of 2024 as he looks increasingly likely to end his career at the same club.
Muller though isn’t ruling anything out beyond the end of his current deal. “I'll push that back,” he said. “I feel good about it, don't feel any pressure and have a wide variety of options.”
