Thomas Brown using Rams’ Super Bowl win and hangover as learning opportunity

Thomas Brown was on the Rams’ coaching staff for their Super Bowl run in 2021. He was also their for their historically bad follow-up season in 2022, finishing 5-12 a year after winning it all.

It’s rare for a team to experience the sharp rise and fall that the Rams had in the last two seasons, but like so many others in Los Angeles, Brown is using it as a learning opportunity.

Brown, the Panthers’ new offensive coordinator, spoke recently about how much he learned from McVay and the Rams organization during his three seasons in L.A.

“I’ve been spoiled to win a Super Bowl and have every desire, hope, and dream to get back to that point. But it’s a lot of work that goes into that process,” Brown said, via the Panthers’ official site. “It’s also not guaranteed. That’s what I learned from this past year. We talked a bunch last year about the Super Bowl hangover, trying to get over the hump. There were a number of different factors that went into it.

“But it was also a great learning opportunity for me. I think sometimes you learn a lot more from your failures than you do from your successes. So it was great to have – even though it was rough at times – those seasons back-to-back.”

Brown is entering his first season as a coordinator, getting a great opportunity with the Panthers on Frank Reich’s staff. He rose the ranks in Los Angeles quickly, impressing those not only in the Rams’ building, but also outside of it, too.

His Rams tenure helped him land this job with Carolina, and the Panthers weren’t the only team showing interest in him. The Commanders, Cowboys, Chargers and Buccaneers interviewed him for coaching positions, too.

The Rams lost a great, young coach in Brown, but McVay should be happy to see him advancing his career as an up-and-coming offensive mind.
