This XXL BBQ is ideal for a large family and cooks for eight people

There are certain rites of passage when it comes to buying your first home. You know, the types of things you’d never really get to invest in while renting. A proper barbecue is one of them.

In the decades before I got to try the Landmann Grand XXL Broiler, I was very much a ‘quick there’s going to be a heatwave this weekend’, reactionary disposable barbecue kinda gal. And those good old disposables did of course serve their purpose of being quick, easy and less hassle than the real deal, or so I thought at the time.

Enter the Grand XXL Broiler - a powerhouse of a barbecue that now has me questioning the sheer existence of my kitchen oven indoors. Yes, I’m now that apron wearing, tong wielding, grill addict who needs no excuse to fire up the coals.

Surprisingly, the reasons are exactly the same as the benefits of disposable barbecues and then some - quick, easy and less hassle but with the monumental addition of creating some of the tastiest food you and your entire family will ever eat.

With its 84 x 45cm, four piece cast iron grill, the XXL Brolier can cook for eight so none of this waiting for the next round of burgers - everyone can eat at once.

The two separate height adjustable charcoal pans mean you can also cater for different eaters i.e. my eldest child who doesn’t really like meat at all but requested “barbecue toast please.” Coming up!

It has a warming rack, thermometer and double skinned lid and this has allowed me to use it beyond the heatwave days and on much cooler evenings as a fun alternative to the kitchen stove - the kids love it.

Added to that, it morphs into so much more than just a barbecue if you get involved with the additional accessories such as a pizza stone set and BBQ wok. All of a sudden you can see the cost per use whittling down..

While a bit time consuming initially, it wasn’t difficult to assemble and it’s so robust that you’ll never have to think about it again. It is solid and as grand as the name suggests though, so I was pleased it’s on wheels and the fold down side tables make it easier to store if you’re short on space.

The cupboard underneath can store all your charcoal and barbecue paraphernalia - again, a really useful addition when you’re limited on storage. Once in situ it all very much feels like a mini outdoor kitchen ready for me to channel Nathan Davies.

For those who don’t know, Nathan Davies is a two Michelin star chef and Great British Menu champion who's been flying the flag for barbecue cooking from day one. Those who watch the show will have seen the amount of fellow chefs who have ‘borrowed’ his barbecue for elements of their own dishes. This is because you simply cannot replicate the taste of a real barbecue in any other way than on a best in class grill. And the Landmann Grand XXL Broiler is just that.

Landmann also stock smaller barbecues to cater to all requirements and budgets. Prices start from as low as £10 !
