Prestigious LA-based interior designer Kelly Wearstler is giving us all of the inspiration we need this summer for creating a modern and serene outdoor living space. Taking to Instagram, Wearstler shared a series of photos of the New York City rooftop her firm designed for a client.
The space has a number of elegant design features, from the mirrored surround to the retro-inspired outdoor floor tiles, creating a luxurious space to relax. Pictured below, we take a closer look at the design of the space.
‘Nestled atop NYC's skyline, this rooftop terrace exudes effortless sophistication we designed for a private client,’ Wearstler writes in the post’s caption.
‘We created a mirrored surround to create a more expansive space, while the stone floor pattern adds dynamic interest. Here, unusual plant specimens, curated pottery, and sculptural furniture add style and multiple variations for entertaining. A serene escape from city life, this terrace offers intimate nooks and lively gathering spots, providing an elevated experience in every sense.’
As explained by Wearstler, the ‘sculptural furniture’ is central to the design of the terrace, and it's a trend we’re loving this summer. Prized for its timeless and simplified design, furniture pieces such as those seen in this NYC home offer a minimalist approach to outdoor-indoor living.
Steering clear from perhaps more traditional outdoor decor trends, such as cottage backyard ideas, opting instead for modern design – such as the neutral-toned lounge chairs with solid wood frames, instantly creates a sophisticated environment.
It’s important to ensure that the layout and furniture pieces work cohesively in an outdoor setting for the way you intend to use the space day-to-day, ensuring it’s equally as practical as it is aesthetically pleasing.
‘When designing your outdoor space, it's important to approach it with the same level of detail as your interior,’ explains Melissa Read, CEO at Studio Burntwood.
‘In the same way, you would design a room, consider who and how many people will use the space. Another factor to consider is the orientation of the furniture to make the most out of the sunlight.’
