Gen Con 2026 visitors were treated to their first glimpse of an official Final Fantasy board game that recreates the original three video games, and damn, it's looking beautiful so far.
Developed by KessCo, Origins of Light: A Final Fantasy Board Game draws inspiration from the Pixel Remaster series which ressurects classic FF titles with new 2D visuals. Judging by the Gen Con preview posted on Reddit by xander574, this licensed Final Fantasy board game brings that same aesthetic to tabletop. Based purely on how it looks, mission accomplished; it's gorgeous.

I'll be honest; although I spend a lot of time covering the best board games, this one completely passed me by. Aside from a quick announcement toward the beginning of 2026, there's not much information out there about this Final Fantasy board game beyond what I've seen on reddit and the game's tease via Kickstarter.
We don't have any details about gameplay either. However, looking closely at the Gen Con preview shows off truly bizarre – but very fitting – crystal dice alongside character and boss cards that may as well have been dragged straight from the 16-bit screen. It appears there's also an overworld map and a town board with space for quests, but the resolution is too low for me to see much else.
Tip of the iceberg
This is far from the only FF tabletop game out there, of course. Besides the wildly popular MTG crossover (which you can get the starter set for easily enough via Amazon), Square Enix sells numerous games on its own store.
Basically, it may be worth keeping an eye on this one if you're an FF fan. Just apply some tempered expectations here; while KessCo has a vast library of IP games to its name, their reception can be mixed.
Still, KessCo's Sonic Knock puck-based board game sold out at this year's Gen Con and appears to have generated the right kind of buzz amongst the community. Hopefully its new Final Fantasy game follows suit.
From what I've been able to find, Origin of Light: A Final Fantasy Board Game will launch toward the end of 2026. Meanwhile, the Kickstarter promises to get going soon. In other words, we should hopefully be able to find out more before long.
This is the second cool Final Fantasy reveal I've found over the last couple of days; a fan's made an incredible Lego Final Fantasy set, and now I'm hoping it becomes a real model.
