It's the moment from last night's Oscars everyone is talking about, Will Smith heading up onto the stage where he slapped comedian Chris Rock. At the time, the shocking live TV moment - which occurred after Chris made a joke about Will's wife Jada Pinkett Smith - had many suspecting whether it was real or part of the planned set.
Will Smith initially seemed to laugh the joke off - which made reference to Jada taking part in the sequel to G.I. Jane - but Jada, who has alopecia rolled her eyes. Within seconds, Will was seen walking up to Chris on the main stage before slapping him across the face and then returning to his seat where he shouted at the comedian: "Keep my wife's name out your ******* mouth."
During a segment on ITV's This Morning where the moment from the Academy Awards on Sunday, March 27 was being discussed Holly Willoughby said there was "no excuse" for the violence and she also argued that Chris Rock's joke was "not funny".
"Obviously there is no excuse for any sort of violence, I mean that was an assault on somebody," Holly continued: "Whether or not people were saying 'well it was just a joke', it was a joke about somebody that has got a condition which is obviously for her, you can see her reaction straight away, she doesn't want that being brought up in an auditorium. It's not funny, it is something that she is living with."
Later on in the programme, both Phil and Holly were requesting viewers to call in with their opinions on the controversial scenes from the awards ceremony. Holly asked viewers to ring in if they could "understand why Will Smith was driven to his extreme actions".
"It's so difficult isn't it, even as you're saying it 'driven to it'," Holly said breaking from the autocue: "Can you ever be driven to violence? That's why we're talking about it". "That's why it's a red mist," co-host Phil added before Holly continued: "Exactly, it's so, it's very, yeah inexcusable really"
This Morning continues weekdays on ITV and ITV Hub from 10am.
