Aldi has once again found itself in hot water with parents over a baby product and this time it is baby milk. Earlier this month parents were left perplexed by a reduction in the quantity of baby wipes in Mamia packs.
Now the supermarket giant has caused outrage over the price increase of Mamia First Infant Milk. Posting on Scrimping On a Budget Facebook group, Tiffany-Jayne Greenhalgh said: "First infant milk in Aldi has gone up from £7.99 to £8.49 in a week wouldn't mind but in the 8 months we've bought it every week it's gone up 10/15p not sure how much longer we can keep up!!"
Parents flocked to the comments section to slam Aldi for the price increase, reports Manchester Evening News.
Williams Kirsty said: "Thank god my twins are on cow's milk. We used to go through 5 tubs of formula a week! And it was crazy expensive without an extra rise. So wrong. Babies milk shouldn't be allowed to have a price increase."
Abbie Bennett said: "Necessity isn't it! Ours sons 3 and still drinks formula (he likes it and it's doing him no harm), the price is crippling. But the way I look at it is, we spend more than that on alcohol, not saying you do, so we've swapped the wine for baby milk in our shopping trolley. So glad I'm pregnant so not missing out too much!"
Shannon Alana wrote: "I walked past the baby milk when looking for body wash and see some mills where £14! That’s ridiculous when we have to feed our babies , I’m due in July and praying I can Breast feed after having complications with my son and having to use formula, I feel sorry for all the parents that have to use it. So expensive!"
Annemarie Keeler commented: "Infant/Baby milk should never be subject to tax or drastic price increase. That is despicable."
Katy Poulloin wrote: "This makes me so sad. It's just wrong. Breastfeeding is very hard to do without the correct support and education. For a westernized country I'm shocked at how backwards we still are with it. But that aside there should be a choice. Formula companies should not be allowed to run for a profit.
"People should be able to have an educated choice in how they feed their babies. It's all very well saying breastmilk is free, and yes it is. But people can't suddenly stop feeding formula when they have started and it doesn't help saying oh it's free. I fed my daughter for almost 4 years but it wasn't easy at all. She has allergies that took a lot of time to figure out because again, the support isn't there.
"People need to stop arguing about BF vs Formula and look at the real problem: a broken infrastructure, sh&t support systems, uneducated professionals, and businesses making money from essential products."
Mel Jellytoes Mousey Stroud slammed: "I'm so glad my 1year old doesn't have baby milk anymore. All these price hikes are getting ridiculous."
Aldi confirmed the price increase, but said it took place earlier in the month and not in the past week. A spokesperson said: “Customers know by shopping at Aldi they will make substantial savings and our Mamia First Infant Milk is on average 16 per cent cheaper than the Big Four supermarkets.
"As Which?’s cheapest supermarket in 2021, we will continue to ensure customers always make significant savings when they shop with us.”
