This major city can breathe a sigh of relief because its MLB team isn't going away — for now

Last week, the sports world in the DMV — the area consisting of Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia, was shaken up. The National Basketball Association's (NBA) Washington Wizards and National Hockey League's (NHL) Washington Capitals struck a deal to move out of D.C. and into a new arena in Virginia.

The move caused a stir to fans in the DMV since two of its major sports teams were set to move to a more suburban area in another state by 2028.

Another major sports team in the DMV — the Baltimore Orioles — were also potentially on the move, but on Monday, the decision was made that the franchise would remain in the city for three more decades, according to a report by Maryland Matters.

The deal keeps the Orioles in its stadium, Camden Yards, until ideally Dec. 31, 2053, and it could extend as much as two additional decades as there are four team options to extend the deal at five years each.

However, there's also a world where the deal lasts less than the 30 years.

There is an escape provision in the deal where the team could get out as soon as 15 years from now, and that depends on the negotiations of the development plans around the stadium. Negotiations between the team and the state on these plans are ongoing for the next three years, and the escape provision can be used if these development rights are not completed by Dec. 31, 2027, according to the same report.

The Orioles have called Camden Yards their home since 1992. While the team has struggled to put out a successful product on the field during most of that time, it's coming off one of its most successful regular seasons in team history after finishing with a record of 101-61.
