More than 2,700 years ago, Spartan settlers crossed the Mediterranean and founded a city on the coast of southern Italy. Today, that ancient city is trying to reconnect with the sea in a way that would have been almost impossible to imagine in antiquity: by creating a sanctuary where dolphins that spent years in captivity can experience a natural marine environment.
The city is Taranto, in Italy's Puglia region, and its relationship with dolphins goes back much further than its modern conservation efforts.
