It is Swansea's newest multi-storey car park, situated opposite Swansea Arena. But people have been wondering why it is taking so long for the development to be completed, and the reason has now been revealed.
Paint which coats the steel is having to be removed and reapplied. An issue became apparent after the coating was added, which has resulted in a considerable amount of work to rectify. Sheeting has covered Copr Bay north car park as the defective paintwork has been dealt with, although it now only surrounds the bottom couple of storeys. Swansea Council, which is behind the Copr Bay project, said remedial work was being carried out when asked by the Local Democracy Reporting Service if there was a paintwork issue. The council said the contractor was handling it - and also said there wasn't an issue with the steel itself, as had been suggested in some quarters.

A council spokesman said: "Finishing works to the north car park are being progressed by our contractor, Buckingham Group. These include remedial works to the paintwork coating system which is applied to steel. Our contractor is working to complete these remedial works - which are being carried out at no additional cost to the council – as soon as possible. These are no concerns about the tempering or quality of the steel, which has been manufactured by British Steel."
He added: "The St David’s multi-storey car park will remain open until the new car park is operational."
The £135 million Copr Bay scheme has delivered Swansea Arena, the coastal park and car park alongside, the yellow pedestrian bridge across Oystermouth Road, and new flats and commercial units. It will cost £3 to leave a car for an hour at Copr Bay north car park when it eventually opens, £4.50 for two hours, £6 for three hours, £10 for four hours and £15 for five hours. Swansea residents will be able to get a parking discount through a new app, which was shown to members of a council corporate delivery committee last week.
