This is what left of a bedroom in a family's home after an unattended oil burner caught fire. Local neighbours spotted the fire in the top bedroom of a house in Ebbw Vale and raised the alarm with the family who were unaware downstairs.
Fire crews were called to the house on Marine Street, Ebbw Vale, at about 8:24pm on Friday, February 17. The burner had been left on a windowsill and a passer-by spotted the blaze from the street.
Crews from Ebbw Vale and Aberbargoed Fire Stations attended the scene and used specialist equipment to extinguish the fire that had taken hold in the bedroom. Thankfully everyone got out safely, but South Wales Fire and Rescue are now using pictures of the aftermath of the blaze as a warning to others.
Station Commander Brian Williams, who attended the scene, said: “This was an accidental dwelling fire caused by a lit burner left on a bedroom windowsill. The family were all downstairs when the fire ignited and the flames were spotted by a passer-by who, thankfully, alerted the family. Everyone was able to escape unharmed and crews attended the scene quickly to extinguish the fire."
He added the warning: "Candles and burners are an increasingly popular way to add an element of relaxation to our homes, however, it’s important to remember that they are an open flame and left unattended or near flammable surfaces can have devastation consequences."
