Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair picked up one of the country's highest honours on Monday after being knighted on Friday. Mr Blair – or Sir Tony as he is now to be officially called – was installed as a member of the Order of the Garter on June 13 during a ceremony attended by his wife, Cherie, and their children Kathryn, Euan, Nicky, and Leo. While his family watched in admiration not everyone was happy at the former PM receiving the UK's most celebrated royal honour for chivalry.
A petition calling for the knighthood to be “rescinded” has reached more than 1.5m signatures in Britain stating he was the "least deserving person of any public honour" and that he should be "held accountable for war crimes". Sir Tony became Prime Minister after winning the 1997 general election and is among the longest-serving leaders of the Queen's 70-year reign. But his time in charge was overshadowed by controversy over his decision to join the US in going to war with Iraq.
His name might be synonymous with 1990s Britain but less well-known, however, is what the former Labour leader is worth. His career has seemingly blossomed since leaving the top job in government and so too has his children's.
According to Wealthy Gorilla former PM Sir Tony is worth a staggering £49m ($60m) while Kathryn, Euan, Nicky, and Leo are worth hundreds of millions between them. This is a breakdown of the Blair family's wealth.
Sir Tony
Sir Tony amassed his £49m fortune in the years prior to and after his premiership. It's worth noting that when he stepped down as PM in 2007 he received a severance package from the state then worth some £300,000. The package reportedly included a pension of almost £64,000 a year and a further £84,000 to run his office as well as a car, a police driver, and 24-hour armed protection. After ending his time as Prime Minister he took on a number of significant roles in the finance and charitable sectors including becoming Middle East envoy for the United Nations, European Union, Russia and the United States.
A year later, the ex-Labour leader compiled a new plan for peace and Palestinian rights before resigning from the post in 2015. As well as these human rights roles he was active in the lucrative private sector, joining investment bank JPMorgan Chase in a senior advisory position.
He also aided Zurich Financial Services with problems they faced regarding climate change and by 2008 he had crafted Tony Blair Associates, a firm offering strategic advice on politics and economics. Other work carried out included launching the Tony Blair Sports Foundation, a group aimed and promoting children's participation in sport.
A further two organisations were created by Sir Tony including the Tony Blair Faith Foundation, based on enduring a greater understanding of religious backgrounds, and the Tony Blair Institute, which championed global change in governments. Away from politics Sir Tony and his wife, Cherie, and own eight residences in total with a combined worth of around £39m.
Euan Blair
Tony Blair's son Euan has seen his tech firm's valuation double in eight months to £1.35bn after securing £175m in funding for Multiverse. It means the 38-year-old, who owns a 25% share of the company, is worth £337m and thus significantly more than his father.
The 'EdTech' company aims to get young people into apprenticeships. Euan, the chief executive, founded the business just six years ago and in the last eight months it has doubled its previous valuation of £700m. The firm now works with more than 500 businesses including Microsoft, Visa, and the investment bank Morgan Stanley. It has helped more than 8,000 people go through apprenticeships in the UK and US. Of the apprentices directly placed with companies by Multiverse 56% of those are people of colour, more than half are women, and a third come from poor communities.
Euan celebrated his success by buying himself a £22m mansion last month. It comes 22 years after his unfortunate brush with the law when he was arrested as a teenager for being drunk after a night out in London celebrating his GCSE results. The 16-year-old Euan Blair made a public apology in 2000, backed by his Prime Minister father, following the police reprimand.
Nicky Blair
Nicky Blair, 36, is a successful football agent specialising in the South American market. He reportedly works out of his mother’s offices in Central London. Companies House records show that Cherie is a co-director of Nicky’s Magnitude sports agency.
It's not their sole collaboration however and the two have also joined forces in the property market. In 2012 Nicky and Cherie reportedly bought a Georgian townhouse in London for £1.35m – and sold it six years later with a £400,000 profit.
In 2018 Nicky married divorce lawyer Alexandra Bevir and the couple paid £2.75m for a home in North London. Nicky, who trained to be a teacher, and his wife had a reception at the Blairs’ Buckinghamshire home South Pavilion. The couple have a young child together.
Kathryn Blair
The former PM's only daughter Kathryn Blair, 34, has followed in her mother's footsteps and is a successful barrister. She married long-term boyfriend James Haslam in Sardinia in 2019.
Barrister Kathryn and James started married life by buying a five-bedroom West London townhouse for £2.4m. She also has another home in London worth some £1.4m, bought in 2015.
In 2013 the Blairs bought a four-bedroom house near their stately Buckinghamshire mansion for £600,000. It is reportedly now owned by Kathryn and her youngest brother Leo.
Leo Blair
Baby of the family Leo Blair is 22. He owns the £600,000 property with his sister and most recently studied at Oxford University.
