If we are to trust anybody's opinion on bedding, it would be Nate Berkus'. Since rising to television fame, the designer (known for his eponymous show) has helped shape every room in our home – but his latest bedding collaboration with Bloomingdale's takes the focus into the bedroom.
The collection, now available via the New York institution, comprises some of the best bed sheets and pillows on the market – and to mark its release, we sat down with Nate to discuss all things bedroom-related. Naturally, this involves the question of how our bedding choices can help us sleep better.
'The right bedding impacts sleep. I'm sensitive to that in my bedroom and in our guest rooms – where I have both a soft and firm pillow. You should have both because people have different preferences,' Nate says.
Pillows aside, Nate says that, when buying bedding, we should look into the weave and quality of the cotton and how it washes. The material also impacts the temperature – something to look out for at any point on the calendar.
'I don't like bedding that sleeps warm – I don't know many people that do; it's much better to start with foundational bedding that sleeps a little cooler – because if you're warm in the middle of the night, there's nothing you can do,' he explains. 'It's not easy to find something that will be universally correct for every type of sleeper, but I definitely think it's easier to do anything when you're comfortable.'
Just as Nate suggests, this lesson translates even beyond the bedroom. 'In the last 30 years, I have learned that the designs of our homes impact everything as we move through the world,' he explains. 'When your dining chair is comfortable, it's nicer to stay for a longer dinner. When your bed is comfortable, it's wonderful to lay and read before you fall asleep.'
'When a home really does represent the people that live there, there's a cleaner pathway to tranquility, effectiveness, and an ability to thrive. It checks an important box when our homes rise up to greet us.'
Of course, the first step to a therapeutic (yet indisputably good-looking) home begins with our top picks from Nate's new collection below.
