This is how President Joe Biden described the USA football team's chances against Wales in the World Cup

American President Joe Biden has called the USA football team 'underdogs' in their upcoming clash against Wales in the Qatar World Cup. The 80-year-old made the statement during what was meant as a morale-boosting telephone call to this home team yesterday (November 20).

In the video footage of the message, posted on the U.S. Men’s National Soccer Team's Twitter account, Biden said: "You guys, I know you’re the underdog. But I tell you what man, you got some of the best players in the world on your team. You’re representing this country and I know you’re going to play your hearts out, so let’s go shock ‘em all. Keep trusting in one another, play as hard as you can for you, your families and your teammates - the whole country is rooting for you."

He added: "I wish I were there to see you, I really do. Go get ‘em guys, just play your hearts out - I know you will."

And, in addition to the President's unintentional 'big-up' to Wales, our boys also got rousing encouragement from Hollywood star Ryan Reynolds and actor Rob McElhenney - both of whom are the owners of Wrexham AFC.

"I want to send all my best wishes to the entire Welsh football club," said Deadpool star Reynolds, who was apparently on his way to Qatar at the time. "Crush all you enemies, drink their blood - go get 'em."

USA v Wales - which marks the start of the team's World Cup campaign - gets under way at 7pm (10pm local time) tonight. The match will be shown live on S4C, where coverage starts at 6pm. It will also be live on ITV1 from 6:05pm. You can also stream live on the ITV Hub.
