This is how cold it will get in Leeds this week as Met Office issues rare 'Amber Alert' for low temperatures

You would be wise to wrap up warm this week, as Leeds could see temperatures plummet to as low as -3°C. This comes after the Met Office issued a rare 'Amber Alert' for cold, which is in place across England.

The alert, which is just one level below a Red Alert - which constitutes a "national emergency" - has been issued as a blistering cold snap sweeps across the country. At the moment, the Amber level means that there is "severe weather action" required.

The Met Office has advised people to look out for vulnerable friends and family members, as well as making sure their own homes are heated to at least 18°C. The Amber Warning is in place across England, but nearby Wales and Scotland are not covered.

The warning came shortly before 9am this morning (Monday, December 5) and is in place from Wednesday, December 7 until Monday, December 12. All of England is covered by the alert, which means that Leeds will not escape the chilly temperatures.

The weather experts have said: "There is a 90% probability of severe cold weather and icy conditions between 1800 on Wednesday 07 Dec and 0900 on Monday 12 Dec in parts of England.

"This weather could increase the health risks to vulnerable patients and disrupt the delivery of services. Please refer to the national Cold Weather Plan and your Trust's emergency plan for appropriate preventive action."

They added that "very cold nights are expected", with widespread frosts and potentially some severe frosts in parts. And they have issued the following advice: "Look out for friends and family who may be vulnerable to the cold, and ensure they have access to warm food and drinks and are managing to heat their homes adequately.

"Try to maintain indoor temperatures to at least 18°C, particularly if you are not mobile, have a long-term illness or are 65 or over. Avoid exposing yourself to cold or icy outdoor conditions if you are at a higher risk of cold-related illness or falls and stay up to date with the latest weather forecasts on the Met Office website."
