This Google Chrome Extension Will Flag Steam Games Made With Generative AI

Steam requires developers to voluntarily declare if their game has any AI-generated content, and this newly discovered Google Chrome extension will immediately pick up on it and flag all games made with machine learning tech.

Google Chrome Extension Flags AI-Made Steam Games

The extension was spotted by outstarwalker on X, who noted the extension reads Steam store pages and searches for generative AI content disclosures, then displays a warning before you even get a chance to browse the page properly. The post drew significant attention, racking up tens of thousands of views within hours of going up.

When a Steam store page contains an AI-generated content disclosure, the Google Chrome extension displays it as a modal pop-up rather than leaving it buried at the bottom of the page. It also blurs out the rest of the page until the pop-up is dismissed.

From there, the player decides whether to continue browsing or head back to the store. The extension was developed by a creator going by "seeeeew" and is available as a native browser extension for both Chrome and Firefox or as a userscript for any supported browser.

All variants run the same code, with the only differences being installation and how updates are delivered.

Steam's Platform Hosts Many AI-Generated Games

Valve requires developers to follow its guidelines on AI content, which includes a system asking them to disclose whether they used AI during development and to specify exactly what it was used for. This can range from admin tools to voiceover generation to in-game assets.

While the policy exists, the disclosure itself sits near the bottom of a game's store page, just above the system requirements. Steam's Next Fest, which showcases demos of upcoming games, has made the issue more visible, with many entries sporting AI-generated art and assets.

Valve describes the AI disclosure as mandatory for any game on the platform, but it can easily escape notice if you are not actively looking for it every time you open a store page.

A recent example that drew controversy was a sci-fi visual novel called "KRYONULL," released on Steam in June, which reportedly had all images and voices generated by AI and was priced at $100.

Use This Chrome Extension to Flag AI Games

The Chrome extension to flag Steam AI games, aptly named "AI Warning for Steam," is open source and renders a full-screen warning that explicitly highlights any AI-generated disclosures the developer may have written, covering everything from small AI assistance to entire game features powered by an AI backend.

It is available for free on the Chrome Web Store and currently has around 4,000 installs.

One limitation worth noting is that the extension will not reveal that a game uses AI if the developers have not disclosed it on the Steam page. It also only works within a browser, so anyone who typically browses Steam through its native launcher will not see the pop-up there.

This new practical tool helps users avoid games made with generative AI, especially for those who campaign against it or denounce the use of generative AI, giving them an early notice and forego the need to scroll down on its listing page.
